Protection

Protection from dental trauma is a tremendous benefit to athletes, especially in contact sports. Injuries to the teeth are painful and expensive, often creating a lifetime of being a “dental cripple”.

In addition, the proper relationship of tooth to tooth contact is a powerful message to the brain. A balanced bite and proper tongue function can have a direct relationship with exceptional overall neurologic function.

Performance

Athletes who have optimal positioning of their jaw joint through dental appliance therapy enjoy the additional benefits of improved muscle strength and overall postural stability through gaining a neuromechanical advantage. This not only enhances performance, but also provides protection from injuries through increased postural stability.

Research indicates that our design of performance appliances can significantly improve both balance and muscular strength for most users. Simply stated, if your teeth are not in the proper position to support your jaw joint, a dental mouthguard can be used to simulate the ideal position during athletic training and performance.

When the body is calibrated to its ideal position and stabilized there through custom mouthguard therapy, the entire system can benefit.

What Does the Research Say?

The most recent research indicates that the optimal positioning of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) allows for improved function of the entire body. We use dental appliance therapy to support the TMJ in the “performance position” to enhance athletic function. In addition, this appliance provides the benefit of protection from TMJ injuries.

Research indicates that performing and exercising in a posture that uses the positioning of the lower jaw to induce a more stable skeletal position can reduce injuries by properly strengthening the muscles needed to stabilize the joints.

A major opportunity with this leading edge technology, is the reduction of whiplash injuries to the upper cervical (neck) joints as well as reducing the effect of concussions.
